Economic and Social Developments
After all these years, the people of Famagusta have managed to remain a closely knit community. Organisations and associations like the Greek Girl’s Lyceum, Anorthosis and other athletic, philanthropic and cultural organizations have remained active throughout the years and become the carriers of the Famagustian’s people’s resolve to return to their city and properties.
The Famagustian entrepreneurial spirit was instrumental in helping people build new lives and businesses in Limassol and elsewhere on the island. Much of the island’s remarkable economic growth after the invasion can be attributed to the effort of some distinguished families of Famagusta that became pioneers in every segment of Cypriot society and constituted the ultimate driving force for the economic rebirth of the island in the years that followed the devastating Turkish invasion.
The Municipality of Famagusta gave the
President of the Greek Republic the broken key to the city
and made him and Honorary Citizen of the city
