Intellectual and Artistic Activities

Many poets, writers, musicians and painters lived and created masterpieces in Famagusta . Amongst them was Pol Georgiou (1901-1971) the forerunner of contemporary Cypriot art, who exposed all the beauty and tragedy of Cyprus through his paintings.

Famagusta also had the honour of accommodating prominent intellectuals from the Greek world including George Seferis and Odysseas Elytis who were invited to Famagusta by Evangelos Louizos, a cosmopolitan that had a beautiful town house on Herakleous Street . A house that Seferis described as “ about to turn into a plant”.

Naturally, the character of a city is reflected by the intellectual drive of its people. Such intellectual beacons were the Greek Lyceum, the Greek Lyceum for Girls, the library of Demetrios Marangos, the Municipal Gallery, the Scientific and Literary Association of Famagusta founded by Dr. Kyriakos Hadjioannou in 1960 as well as many other places.
