Famagusta when we left in August 1974

The hinterland

Famagusta exerted its economic influence over a large area, covering a span of 18 miles from the city and encompassing important villages like Trikomo, Lefkoniko, Lysi, Paralimni and Achna. The population of this area numbered 55,000 inhabitants, all of which were dependent on the city of Famagusta for administrative, economic and commercial reasons. This mainland was not only crowded in human figures, but equally rich in terms of agricultural and animal production.

Vegetables grown in the area of /Kokkinohoria/(meaning red, fertile soil) and the surge in the cultivation and production of the potato crop contributed to the continuous boom of the city, especially when citrus production had started to decline.
The Mesaoria plain, the hinterland of the region stretching between Nicosia, the Pentadaktylos mountain range and Famagusta, was clearly the greatest wheat basin of Cyprus and conditions after 1960 became favourable for farming. The prosperity of the mainland directly benefited the city of Famagusta that became a powerful economic centre.
