Famagusta when we left in August 1974
The hinterland Famagusta exerted its economic influence over a large area, covering a span of 18 miles from the city and encompassing important villages like Trikomo, Lefkoniko, Lysi, Paralimni and Achna. The population of this area numbered 55,000 inhabitants, all of which were dependent on the city of Famagusta for administrative, economic and commercial reasons. This mainland was not only crowded in human figures, but equally rich in terms of agricultural and animal production. Vegetables grown in the area of /Kokkinohoria/(meaning red, fertile soil) and the surge in the cultivation and production of the potato crop contributed to the continuous boom of the city, especially when citrus production had started to decline.
